L'art et la matière is available for new projects
L’art et la matière is a craft business founded by Élodie COURTIN, specialising in earth, lime and lime-plaster renders, as well as natural paints made from clay, casein or lime, including traditional limewash finishes.
The business offers a range of services and can guide you through the initial selection of materials and colours for your spaces, providing 3D colour visualisations and bespoke material samples to help you make the right choices.
Élodie also carries out the work itself, tailoring each project to your aesthetic preferences and comfort requirements. She uses renders made from natural materials such as plant fibres and clay, which help eliminate cold wall surfaces, regulate indoor humidity, absorb odours and sound, and improve thermal comfort through radiant heat absorption.
She can also support you as part of an Assisted Self-Renovation (Auto-Réhabilitation Accompagnée – ARA) project. This approach allows homeowners to carry out renovation work themselves while receiving guidance and advice from a building professional.
Based in Saint-Genix-sur-Guiers, in the Avant-Pays Savoyard region, the business has been operating since 2014.
With 12 years of experience, L’art et la matière offers a wide range of renders and paints made from bio-based and locally sourced natural materials, combining colours and textures that range from raw and understated to refined and sophisticated.
Élodie creates her own mixtures and applies thin and decorative renders, engraved finishes using the sgraffito technique (from the Italian sgraffiare, meaning "to scratch"), an artistic and craft technique involving scratching or incising a surface layer to reveal an underlying layer or colour. Her expertise also includes lime-hemp and clay-hemp thermal insulation renders, stucco finishes with glossy or satin effects, and natural paints.
Originally trained as an architectural assistant, Élodie went on to work as an eco-construction specialist in 2010 before founding L’art et la matière in 2014. She brings a comprehensive and complementary perspective to architecture, helping identify the most appropriate solutions for both renovation and new-build projects. Particular attention is paid to the existing surfaces and substrates to ensure they are properly prepared, guaranteeing durable, long-lasting finishes.
An ecological and artistic approach
The company's commitment to environmentally responsible materials has led L’art et la matière to specialise in clay renders made from recycled rammed-earth materials, as well as the use of raw, minimally processed natural resources. The aim is to work with renewable materials while preserving their natural properties.
To create unique finishes for every space, Élodie combines traditional craftsmanship (the skill of the hand and the beauty of materials) with artistic creativity through carefully selected colours and decorative sgraffito designs.
We look forward to helping you bring your natural renovation project to life.
